These records contain abstracts of patent and grant books which were recorded by county in the Land Office under General Assembly authorization passed February 24, 1818. The volumes contain as few as one or as many as fourteen counties, including those now part of Kentucky and West Virginia. For each county, the patent or grant book is listed separately and in columns thereunder are the page in that volume on which the grant is entered, the name of the grantee(s), the date the grant was issued, the number of acres in the tract, and a brief description of the land, usually including only the watercourse or adjoining landholders. Negative photostats are available for volumes 0-9, 11-26, 28, and 35, and a positive photostat for volume 25. Those early patents which failed to designate the county in which the land lay are listed in abstract 0. The two volumes have an accession number of 25752. Entries made in the period that the Land Office was under the auspices of the secretary of the commonwealth are entered in volume 42. Since the Land Office has been under the jurisdiction of the state librarian, county abstracts have not been maintained.
